Sub brand "Aina"

This poster advertises a Finnish inspired knife (puukko)

and its versatility. "Strong enough to carve an animals hide, yet delicate enough to cut a tomato."

I used Finnish words to express the "Finnish-ness" further— or at least the "foreign-ness." And since not enough people speak Finnish, I have pictorial representations of the word.

Well hello!

No. I wasn't being lazy when I neglected this blog for months.

The past several months I've been buried. I'm still buried, but I thought I should take a 30 minute breather and think about other things.

I'd like to take this moment of absolute ___ to expose the roots of my work. Influence, inspiration...

I'd like to call this the 'what i've collected in a folder over many months'.

Here we are together again. Sitting in rooms of white cinder block, in front of aluminum tables (that makes just as a pleasing a sound as carving your name into a ceramic plate with a fork) when you drop a metal ruler on top of it.

The first week has past and the weekend offered a window of joy that slammed shut when the thought of assignments blustered through- And the weather was perfect this weekend.

Five classes, one job, one internship. Not bad at all, but much larger a plate than what I had previous semesters. But don't worry, I prepared. I knew what was going to happen to me the first week so I had stashed away a pint of "rice cream" to battle the stress I was stepping into that my brain was going to magnify. The problem was that I needed five pints. I demolished a single pint within twenty minutes. Ok so, that's not cost efficient or healthy-even if it is made of rice.

What happened? Yeah, ok, five classes-what's the big deal? You would think I would be smooth sailing with a hand full of liberal arts classes, buy a few books, write a few papers... That's exactly it. I'm accustomed to drawing/sketching the things that float in my head, not write it down. And with all the tweeting (not twittering) blogging, texting, instant messaging one would think I have something good to say, more to write but my spelling has gone down the commode. And that was one of the things I was confident, if not cocky about. (Nerdy thing to brag about, I know)

Grammar is another issue. I blame society.

Kettle Corn

Recently, I've been popping my own popcorn over a stove.

Ingredients: oil, kernels

That technique has been mastered. Now I'm ready to get serious.

Kettle corn.

So I've done my research and I've found several recipes that I intend to manipulate and combine. Here is one.

In a 6 quart sauce pan put 2 tablespoons of (vegetable/canola/olive/corn oil)

Turn your stove up to a medium setting (mine would be 4.5)

Toss in 3 kernels to test.

Once they've all popped you may pour in 1/3 cup of white/yellow popcorn kernels.

Put the lid on and gently agitate the pan back and forth.

Wait around 10-20 seconds and pour in your desired amount of salt and sugar.

If I'm making basic kettle corn I like to put in more sugar than salt.

Ok, all the kernels have been popped. If you're not satisfied with basic taste...

Here are some more options:

1 tbsp. cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 1/8 tsp. nutmeg, 1/8 tsp. 1/2 tsp. apple or pumpkin pie spice. You can also add 1/2 tsp. of vanilla or other flavoring extract with the sugar. Try using brown sugar or honey instead of sugar for a richer flavor.

I had never thought of someone becoming vegetarian/vegan only to reach a point of boredom. When I asked an ex vegetarian why they no longer cared to stick to a diet they had practiced for two decades– I considered my reasons. I was in the middle of an email and I realized I could get this off my chest.

I understand the annoyances and constant questioning, and for the most part dining with groups is nearly impossible unless everyone agrees to spend half their weeks salary at a vegan restaurant. It's one thing when people think its strange not to eat meat but when you turn away cheese people start to think you're an insane animal activist or terminally ill.

Isn't it expensive?:

While veggie dogs, nuggets, patties, soy milk, cheese, cream cheese, ice cream and butter... are $2-5 more expensive than its animal by-product cousin I find myself buying less at the grocery store. Quality over quantity.

And what you're buying is going into your body. $1.30 bag of chips with repetition will lead to an artery clot or $3.00 for a pound of red delicious...

So you know what they say, crap in crap out.

There's no sustenance in vegetables, aren't you always hungry?:

If you have eaten two baked potatoes and you're still hungry after that...

Sure, at the beginning of my new diet, it was hard. I was constantly hungry, I was frustrated because I couldn't eat my favorite foods, and frankly, I didn't know what the hell I was doing. "There's a replacement for butter?" What is that? I had to acquire a taste for tofu but I'm all settled and I don't miss eating dead, steroid pumped Lamb Chop.

Are you uncomfortable when people around you eat meat?:

Not especially. I become annoyed when it's shoved in my face on a bloody fork. "Look at me, oh it's so good, this baby cow is delicious!" If I've taken a difficult step in an animal obsessed culture the least people can do is keep it to their plate and mouth. How would you like if I cooked the family pet and shoved it your face?

No, not pleasant.

But it is an amazing discipline and there's constant discovery and innovation involved. I believe if I had the choice, I could not go back to "eat everything and anything" I've learned so much from cooking and baking myself its more rewarding than taking dinner out of a box, shove into a freezer and watch it bubble and spin in the microwave. Despite ignorance, the judgmental, the not-so-funny jokes... I will continue and urge people around me to eat slightly healthier. But on my 6 month anniversary I'm making blueberry tofu ice cream.

Cow's Milk: A Substitute for Human Milk

Not only are we the only animal that drinks another animal's milk, be we are also the only animal the drinks it into adulthood. All female animals produce milk for the same reason: to feed and nourish their offspring. At a certain age, depending on the mammal, the infant is able to move onto solid food and is weaned off of the mothers milk-every mammal, that is, except humans. Despite the fact that humans don't even continue drinking human milk after being weaned, we're told we have to drink cow's milk. And despite the fact that calves naturally stop drinking cow's milk after they're weaned, humans have been duped into believing that they must drink it as adults. It makes absolutely no sense, but it makes good business and good money.

Thanks to the dairy industry, whose government-sponsored advertisements pose as a public service announcements, humans are taught that we need cow's milk. This stuff is sold as if it contains some magical formula designed just for human bodies, and the truth is it is a perfect formula, designed just for growing babies- bovine babies, that is.

Cattle are herd animals, which means they are easy to control because they move together and stay together. In other words, "cattle" meet certain requirements that make it easy for humans to contain them. Let's not kid ourselves into believing that humans struck nutritional gold when they started drinking cow's milk.

Cow's milk is a commercial product in that it is marketed and sold as if it's natural for humans. It has billions of dollars behind it in advertising and is totally unnecessary for human survival and health. Cow's milk protein is considered a carcinogen (cancer causing substance); has been strongly linked to childhood-onset, or type 1, diabetes; and leeches calcium from our bones, according to The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, PhD.

The main selling point for cow's milk is its calcium content, and indeed calcium is an important nutrient. But where does it come from? It's a mineral, and minerals are found in the ground. Cows have a lot of calcium in their milk because they eat plants. They eat grass, which, like all green leafy vegetables, contains high amounts of calcium. These days, though, because three out of four cows are not eating grass and are not let out to graze but are confined on dry lots, they aren't getting calcium. So, to ensure that cow's milk has calcium, producers supplement their feed with calcium, and they add vitamin D during processing, according to The Welfare of Cattle in Dairy Production, a summary of scientific evidence released by Farm Sanctuary that exposes and evaluates common practices in the dairy industry. If we examined this strictly from a resource perspective, we would recognize how wasteful it is, but it's also incredibly unethical. Just like humans, cows have nine-month-long pregnancies, and like any female, all she wants is to take care of her baby when he or she is born.

To the dairy industry, this newborn is just a by-product of the need to keep her lactating. Male babies are taken away when they're born and either killed immediately or sold to the veal industry. If the cow gives birth to a female, she is taken away to become part of the dairy herd, and the process begins all over again. All so humans can have calcium? Though we have certainly been made to believe this is the reason, the truth is there's money to be made in the reproductive cycles of female animals.

If we really want to get out essential minerals, we can do what the cows do: eat our leafy greens. Calcium is abundant in kale, broccoli, collard greens, chard, beet greens, and Brussels sprouts, as well as oatmeal, beans, fortified juice, and nondairy milks.

We can make a huge difference in our own health and in the lives of animals if we leave the cow's milk to the cows.

How much energy is truly being used with lamps, TVs, cell phone chargers, toaster ovens, microwaves, VCRs, DVD players... when said items are turned off? Apparently it's not a conversation to be argued about. I think all it comes down to is how much you care about the electric bill or the environment. Fortunately, I don't have an electric bill but I do care to make a small footprint.

Spring break literally started when my ass hit the chair with wheels after my Team presentation. Drawing and Marketing don't raise a single hair on the back of my neck and that seems to be the last 2 classes I need to make an appearance every Thursday. I have yet to take a look at the list that I need to address during break so I don't come back to Columbus in a panic state.

Another Reason to Read

Twitter has allowed me to ask questions (get nearly immediate answers), vent sometimes, stalk famous people, and most importantly, investigate links that fellow designers post.

During my Tweet career, I have never clicked on a link and instantly regretted it.

Today, I was reminded of an author who wrote two of my favorite books. That man is Jonathan Safran Foer. I read 'Everything Is Illuminated' during the summer before my senior year of high school. After that, it took me two years to discover another gem called, 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' which I loved and read last September.

I was very grateful for that book. It helped me through some nasty times.

Other than the irresistible lure of the plot. The novel offers design elements delicately and viciously slapped in its' pages. Overlapping text, pages of numbers and code and photographs went beyond telling the story.

I've also requested another old favorite from my junior english class.

'The Great Gatsby'. In high school, I did, in fact steal a copy from the lost and found once, but with many things that I stole I would end up losing anyway– or get stolen. Karma.

Unfortunately, the cover of 'The Great Gatsby' would've never pulled my interests. (Since I do indeed judge a book by its cover)
